Zipcar Brings Eight Cars to White Plains
White Plains residents without a car no longer need to rely on calling cabs or friends for a ride.
Zipcar, an international car-sharing service, made its official entry into the city on last week, and eight cars are now available at three locations near or in the downtown.
“I think the Zipcar program will quickly gain membership and expand to even more locations over the next few months and years,” Mayor Tom Roach said Tuesday, June 26, as he welcomed the company into White Plains. “It will reduce traffic congestion and emissions, which is good for the environment. This program works particularly well in the downtown area, because residents can walk to the locations and pick up the car for an hour, a few hours or an entire day.”
People who register with Zipcar can rent a car by the hour or by the day, walk or ride their bikes to one of the three locations where the Zipcar vehicles are parked and hold their Zipcar card to the windshield of the car they’ve reserved to unlock it. They can then use the Zipcar for their reserved time before parking it in the same space in which they found it.
“We are extremely excited to be expanding to such a dynamic and vibrant community,” Zipcar General Manager Charlie Irons said Tuesday. “Our expansion into White Plains will support the city’s efforts to make alternative transportation options even more efficient, economical and sustainable.”
Zipcars are currently located at the White Plains Center and Hamilton-Main garages and the Bronx Street Lot adjacent to the train station. Irons said he expects the company to add more cars in the city.
