The Yorktown Town Board is scheduled to meet with the town’s new garbage hauler after many residents experienced a disruption in their normal garbage and recycling collections last week.

Competitive Carting, which last October was awarded a five-year contract from the Town Board, took over garbage collection from AAA Carting on Jan. 1. The town is paying Competitive Carting $3.5 million this year for its services.

As of Monday morning, Supervisor Tom Diana said most homes have had a pickup after Competitive Carting worked through the weekend to catch up.

“With the start of a new weekly cycle, we expect all collections will be getting back to normal,” Diana said. “We recognize that last week’s disruptions were inconvenient and inconsistent with the level of service our residents expect and deserve. We have also received reports of crews comingling garbage with recycling. We have reported this to Competitive Carting and emphasized that comingling is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Diana attributed the situation to new truck drivers learning routes and back-to-back four-day holiday weeks.

He noted in the past changes in carting vendors have had similar initial disruptions.

Competitive Carting is slated to attend Tuesday night’s Town Board work session to discuss the situation and its initial performance.

“We encourage our residents to watch on the Town’s website or on public access television,” Diana said.

Mahopac-based Competitive Carting, owned by Brian Amico, former head of Competition Carting, which won Yorktown’s garbage contract 10 years ago, contains an option to extend the agreement for three years. It has several other contracts in many communities in northern Westchester and southern Putnam counties.
