Yorktown’s Disputed Trash Contract Could End Up Costing Taxpayers

Yorktown’s former garbage hauler, AAA Carting, has filed a lawsuit against the Yorktown Town Board alleging favoritism, not doing its due diligence and improprieties in the process that awarded a multiyear and multimillion-dollar garbage contract to Competitive Carting. Competitive Carting’s first two months of operation was off to a very rocky start. The Town Board stated that cost savings was the reason for choosing Competitive Carting because their first year bid was $600,000 lower than AAA Carting.
If the judge decides that AAA Carting allegations have any merit and that competitive bid statutes were not followed, it will potentially cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands in court costs and damages.
The optics of Competitive Carting hiring a former Town Board member to lobby the current Town Board on its behalf raises the question of impartiality and objectivity in some residents’ minds. Now it’s up to the judge to decide.
