Yorktown Satisfied with New Garbage Hauler So Far
Despite some reported problems in the southern end of town, Yorktown officials expressed satisfaction with the town’s new garbage hauler following its first week of service.
“We’re happy to report everyone’s garbage is being picked up,” said Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace. “It’s going smoothly. We had a few glitches that have been cleared up. These guys have been working overtime. So far, so good.”
Grace explained some hurdles experienced by Competition Carting were the result of former hauler C.R.P. Sanitation removing some dumpsters and failing to pick up some garbage at the end of the year when their contract expired. He also noted Competition Carting was collecting recyclables in two separate runs since their vehicles are different than C.R.P.
Michael and Linda Pendergast of Old Kitchawan Road said their recyclables weren’t picked up on time and animals had spread garbage all over the street.
“Why did you change? Our garbage service is horrendous,” the couple told the town board. “Sometimes when you pay less for something you get inferior service.”
Councilman Nick Bianco urged residents to be patient with the new garbage company, which is costing the town $800,000 less than it did with C.R.P. in 2012.
“There are glitches. Hopefully they’ll get better. I think they’re getting better,” he said.
