A Mount Vernon woman plunged to her death from The Westchester mall in White Plains Thursday afternoon in what police believe to be a suicide.

The 53-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released, is believed to have entered Cafe Nordstrom, a restaurant located on the top floor of the three-story department store in the mall, walked to the café’s outdoor dining area and jumped off the side of the building, landing near the corner of Bloomingdale Road and Westchester Avenue, according to White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong.

Police received a 9-1-1 call just before 3 p.m. and a detective unit was there within minutes, Chong said. The woman was still alive but was “in terrible shape,” according to Chong, and was transported to White Plains Hospital. She was declared dead almost immediately upon arrival, Chong said.

Chong said police are investigating the death as a suicide and that “there’s nothing suspicious.”
