Winter Farmers Market Opens In JV Mall Saturday
Local residents who enjoy homegrown and homemade goods don’t have to wait until the warm weather returns.
A new Yorktown Winter Farmers’ Market, overseen by the not-for-profit company Maize Market Management, is scheduled to open Saturday, January 12 in center court at the Jefferson Valley Mall and run every Saturday until May 11.
Karen Symington Muendell said the success of the Farmers’ Market behind Yorktown Heights Engine Company #1 on Commerce Street for 22 weeks last year led to interest in the market being held indoors.
“There’s only a handful of winter markets in Westchester, none of them in this area,” Muendell said. “It’s a way to bring a community feeling back to the mall and help it be again the center hub for this community. Even though it’s small, we have a good selection.”
Five vendors have committed to taking part in the Winter Farmers’ Market: Gaia’s Breath Farms, Meredith Country Bakery, Merriweather’s, Maura and Nuccia and Tierra Farm.
Whereas Maize Market Management donated all the proceeds from the Farmers’ Market to charitable organizations each week, Muendell said any profits from the Winter Farmers’ Market would be banked and allocated to a charity chosen by customers at a later date.
The Winter Farmers’ Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the former movie theater on the first floor.
