White Plains Trial Lawyer Stars in One-Man Play about Clarence Darrow this Weekend at WPPAC
“All Too Human” is a one-man play about the life of the world renowned, often controversial 20thcentury trial attorney, Clarence Darrow.
Written and performed by White Plains trial lawyer and equity actor, Henry Miller, the production was presented at White Plains Performing Arts Center in 2005 before going off-Broadway where is was received with much acclaim, and now returns for one weekend in White Plains. Shows are March 15, 16 and 17.
According to production notes, Darrow was the plain-speaking son of Mid-western abolitionists who considered himself “a cunning actor like that other trial lawyer from Illinois, Abe Lincoln.” He argued and won many of the most famous cases ever brought to trial; defending the down-trodden and the amoral; the maligned and the misguided; the obsessed and the oppressed; all human beings; all too human.”
Darrow was well known for his wit, agnosticism, and sometimes scandalous behavior. His eloquence often brought the jurors to tears. He was both an effective labor lawyer and a criminal defense attorney. He even represented himself in his own trial for bribery. According to Mr. Miller, “Clarence Darrow inspired more people to become lawyers than any other person in history.” Among his famous cases were the Leopold and Loeb murder and the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial, which concerned the teaching of evolution in Tennessee schools.
Author-performer Henry Miller has spent the past 50-plus years in courtrooms as well as on stage. He was a longtime student of Stella Adler, is a published playwright and a revered trial lawyer.He is a past president of the New York Bar Association and the senior partner in the personal injury firm of Clark, Gagliardi & Miller. Mr. Miller’s courtroom appearances attract a sizeable audience of attorneys who admire his courtroom rhetoric.
All Too Human plays at the White Plains Performing Arts Center for three performances only, March 15-17, 2013.
