White Plains Mourns Death of Deputy Fire Chief Delanoy
The White Plains Public Safety Department is mourning the sudden death on Wednesday of Deputy Chief William J. Delanoy, a well-loved member of the Fire Bureau.
“I am heart broken. He was one of my go to chiefs and a personal friend,” said Public Safety Commissioner David Chong. “ He has left a huge void.”
“William is a true son of White Plains,” Chong continued. “If you were to consider the fire department as a team, he was the starting quarterback. He was a problem solver. There wasn’t anything he could not figure out.”
Mayor Tom Roach echoed Chong’s sentiments: “The unexpected passing of Deputy Chief Delanoy is a great loss for the City of White Plains. He served the City of White Plains with professionalism and integrity for 35 years and was a person that everyone liked and respected. He will be missed,” Roach said.
Delanoy, 58, died of a heart attack. He joined the Whited Plains Fire Department on August 14, 1978, was promoted to lieutenant on August 28, 1997 and to deputy chief on January 5, 2004. His father, Joseph Delanoy, who is now retired, also served as a firefighter, making it to the position of lieutenant. Delanoy’s son Christopher Delanoy is currently a member of the department. Delanoy’s wife Joanne Delveccio has worked for the city for many years. “The entire family has served White Plains for decades,” Chong said.
Delanoy will be waked at McMahon Funeral Home, 491Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 10 from 4p.m. to 8 p.m. The Department service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday. The funeral is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 92 South Lexington Avenue, White Plains, across the street from the White Plains Public Safety Department building.
