White Plains Council Approves 2nd Salt Storage Structure
The White Plains Department of Public Works will construct a second salt storage facility in the Gedney Recycling Yard, now that the structure and its location have been approved by the city council.
The main salt storage facility for White Plains is located off of Westchester Avenue at the Kenscio DPW yard.
During the July 5 Council meeting, members asked Department of Public Works Commissioner Richard Hope to describe the structure and where it will be located in the yard. Councilwoman Milagros Lecuona was particularly concerned that the structure not be too visible during the winter and also asked that residents be notified of what was happening.
Hope said DPW had looked at several spots in the Gedney Yard to place the structure and finally decided on almost dead center because that was the most shielded from residential view.
Mayor Tom Roach explained that the second location would be used as back-up salt storage, enabling the city to purchase salt for winter storm use when the prices were at the lowest of the year.
The main storage facility would remain the location where salt is loaded onto trucks for dispersal on city streets. The back-up storage area would be accessed only during daytime hours and trucks would load up to bring salt to the main storage area when needed.
