White Plains Actress Expands to Producing and Writing
By Paige Leskin: It’s one step in an actor’s life to land a big role. But, it takes a whole other step to successfully write and produce a piece.
Karla Mosley, a part-time White Plains resident, is one of those actors who have the unique talent to be able to shine in front of and behind the camera. She has just helped produce and write a CBS online series called Room 8, which she also stars in.
Room 8 acts as a spinoff of the television soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, where Mosley joined the regular cast as actress Maya Avant. The new series will feature Mosley and actor Lawrence Saint Victor, who also plays a major role in B&B, as Carter Walton.
However, in Room 8, B&B characters Avant and Walton co-star. They play roommates Scarlett Howard and Lance Moore, who reluctantly share an apartment. As per what happens often when different people meet, opposites attract, and the short series explores their chemistry.
As Mosley was busy filming B&B on a regular basis, she was forced to squeeze in Room 8 around her busy schedule. “It was created in just a couple weeks,” she said. “We had one thirteen hour taping day and shot all of the shows.”
Before becoming involved in soap operas, Mosley grew up in Westchester, where she knew from a young age that she wanted to go into theatre and acting.
“I was always involved in the arts. My family did a lot of singing, and there was always music around the house,” she said. She attended an art camp during the summer, and participated in various productions locally. “Once I was on stage, I knew,” she said.
Mosley learned much of what she knows about the production side of acting when she attended Tisch School of the Arts, the prestigious performing arts school of New York University. While there, she became part of the popular children’s show Hi-5 for three years. “It got me into television. It was like boot camp training,” she said.
But Mosley’s big debut as an actress came with the role of Christina Moor Boudreau on the soap opera Guiding Light, cancelled in 2009. This launched her career in the soap world, which she has been a major part of since.
Now living mostly in Los Angeles, Mosley says she misses Westchester. “A lot of shows are cast out of LA,” she said. “It’s hard for me to be out here because my husband lives in White Plains. But, I’m building relationships here.” She is married to Jeremiah Frei-Pearson, a local lawyer and chairman of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities.
Mosley’s web series can be seen on room8theseries.com. A new episode premieres every few days, each lasting 5-6 minutes. The first three are already online. As for the future of the show, Mosleys says that the team is “waiting on the feedback”.
