🎵 PRELUDE: Gimme Shelter
Although Lisa Fischer didn’t sing on the original Rolling Stones track (Merry Clayton did), she sang the duet with Mick and The Stones a multitude of times between 1989 and 2013 while on tour. You can watch these magnificent performances on YouTube.
Lisa Fischer grew up Brooklyn and studied opera, later turning to R&B. During her long, successful music career Fischer has recorded and performed on stage with Luther Vandross, The Rolling Stones, Sting, Tina Turner, Nine Inch Nails, Bruce Springsteen, and many others.
A mesmerizing vocalist, Lisa Fischer also recorded and toured on her own earning a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1992 for “How Can I Ease The Pain”. She was also featured in the Oscar-winning documentary film about backup singers called “20 Feet From Stardom”. Fischer recently sang alongside Jackson Browne and Larry Campbell at The Capitol Theatre for a special concert called “The Capitol Session”. It was her vocal performance that blew the audience away.

Longtime Putnam Newspaper Owner Don Hall Dies at 91: Don Hall, the longtime owner of the Putnam County Press and the Putnam Times, died Sunday, Jan. 30. Hall was 91 and died in Putnam Hospital after battling illness for many months accompanied by frequent stays at the hospital. The official cause of death has not yet been reported. (Examiner)
📅 FLASHBACK: 1909
This 1909 photo shows Leo Baekeland hard at work in his Yonkers lab. A Yonkers resident himself, it was in a barn on his property, better known as Snug Rock, that he created Bakelite, one of the first synthetic plastics ever made. After being introduced to the public at a chemical conference in 1909, Bakelite exploded. As the company slogan appropriately stated, it was “The Material of a Thousand Uses.” Despite the eventual downfall of Bakelite due to issues with color and competition, the plastic world would never have been the same without Baekeland’s great invention. In 1944, Leo Baekeland died at the age of 80 and was buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Although Snug Rock burned down in 1957, items from Baekeland’s collection can be seen in several museums across the country, and some of Baekeland’s personal items are on exhibit at the Hudson River Museum. — MADDIE STONE
