🎵 PRELUDE: January Hymn

The Decemberists are an American indie rock band from Portland, Oregon. The band consists of Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query, and John Moen who are all multi-instrumentalists. Their songs range from upbeat pop to instrumentally lush ballads and convey tales ranging from whimsical to dark or political.

Some interpret “January Hymn”’s luscious lyrics to be about loss. Others like myself, prefer to think about it as a song about the cycle of seasons, how we wish winter would quickly pass.

“April all an ocean away
Is this a better way to spend the day?
Keeping the winter at bay.”

For those who want to hear another The Decemberists song about the summer, listen to their gorgeous and poetic song, “June Hymn” from the same album called The King is Dead

Happy New Year!
