It’s only one year old, but the Westchester County Household Materials Recovery Facility in Valhalla has made a major impact toward protecting the environment.

The H-MRF has already collected over 325,000 pounds of household materials, including hazardous and toxic items, County Executive Rob Astorino said during an April 11 press conference to mark the first anniversary of its opening.

Astorino, who wants to increase the facility’s use, said a little more than 3,500 Westchester households have used the site.

“We want more and more people to utilize this,” Astorino said. “We want a lot more to understand that it’s here. Just make a quick appointment and come. In the past you had these (disposal) days maybe twice a year. And now it’s centrally located. People can bring their junk, their hazardous materials, their tires, their computers, their electronics, all the things that are underneath the sink.”

“It will be disposed of properly so it’s not in the environment,” he added.

The facility is located at 15 Woods Rd. on the Grasslands Reservation. It is open to Westchester residents, by appointment only, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A wide assortment of items are accepted at the facility, including tires, propane tanks, computers, cell phones, air conditioners, refrigerators, rechargeable batteries, medications, a wide assortment of automotive fluids, pesticides, insecticides and confidential papers residents want shredded.
