Truck Overturns on Route 9A; No Serious Injuries Reported
Route 9A in Hawthorne was closed for several hours last Tuesday afternoon when a large dump trailer overturned after the driver of a passenger car lost control of his vehicle and struck the truck’s right tire.
The accident occurred at 11:36 a.m. just north of the Belmont Road intersection, which is currently a construction zone, related to the building of the nearby Amazon warehouse that is expected to open later this year.
The driver of a 2010 Mazda four-door sedan, a 26-year-old Ossining man, reported head pain and may have suffered a concussion, police said. The driver of the 2017 Kenworth tractor pulling the dump trailer, a 65-year-old Fishkill man, had to be taken out of the cab through the window and was apparently uninjured. The truck is owned by VS Construction of Ossining.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Mount Pleasant Police Chief Paul Oliva said the Mazda was overtaking the tractor-trailer in the right lane on northbound Route 9A when it struck a cement barrier on the right side of the road causing him to lose of the vehicle and strike the truck’s front right tire. The collision caused the truck driver to lose control and overturn, spilling much of the load in the trailer onto the roadway, Oliva said.
He said wet roads from rainfall that day was a contributing factor in the mishap.
The state Department of Transportation (DOT) arrived at the scene with a front-ed loader to help clean up the road, he said.
Oliva said the lanes are narrower than a standard lane in that location because of the construction zone. The DOT’s resident engineer reported to police the following day that steps are being taken to change the lane pattern in the area to have one northbound lane, one southbound lane and a center turn lane, which should enhance safety.
Route 9A was closed to traffic northbound from Dana Road in Valhalla and southbound from the Route 141 exit until late afternoon, police said. Local traffic was allowed up to the accident scene. Traffic was detoured onto Route 100 and Route 100C.
