Town Applauds Volunteerism of Mahopac Garden Club
Each spring, venues throughout Mahopac are cleaned out, weeded, and filled with beautiful plants and flowers.
It’s not the Town of Carmel that takes on this task, but the members of the Lake Mahopac Garden Club, who each year break out their gardening gloves, rakes and trowels and volunteer their time to bring horticultural delights to the hamlet.
The members of the Carmel Town Board officially recognized the garden club at its Wednesday, June 6 meeting when Town Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt and the other four town board members presented three representatives of the club – Lori DiBiase, Barbara Schaefer and Town Clerk Ann Garris – with an official proclamation.
Supervisor Schmitt said that earlier in the week he had attended the garden club’s annual luncheon and was enlightened to the club’s activities, which includes putting plants and flowers in Sycamore Park, the courtyard in Mahopac Public Library, Volz Park, Planten Park, the Koehler Senior Center and next to the “Welcome to Mahopac” signs on Route 6N.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to present this proclamation this evening… you do an awesome job and it shows every year in the spring when all of the flowers are planted and all of the landscaping beds are cleaned up. It’s beautiful for the community,” Supervisor Schmitt said. “It makes a big difference and so we want to extend our thanks to you and to the club for everything that you do for this community and you mean a lot to us…it’s a lot of hard work and you volunteer…I commend you for that.”
In addition to the proclamation, the members of the Town Board unanimously approved a resolution recognizing National Garden Week from June 3 to June 9 and declaring the same for the Town of Carmel.
Schaefer said that community members who would like to join the Garden Club are more than welcome and can visit the club’s website for more information at www.lakemahopacgc.com
The Lake Mahopac Garden Club also will be holding their annual flower show on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29 at Sycamore Park on Long Pond Road in Mahopac.
