Tops Supermarket to Replace Hannaford in Putnam Plaza
Though it’s unclear when, it’s a forgone conclusion that the Hannaford Supermarket in Carmel will soon be replaced with another supermarket chain.
In a press release, Tops Markets confirmed it has entered into an agreement to purchase the Hannaford located in Putnam Plaza, along with four other stores in the Hudson Valley. Tops intends to have the stores re-bannered and operated under Tops Markets’ name, while still offering to keep on the associates that are currently employed with Hannaford. All stores purchased by Tops would continue operation without delay, according to the release.
“We are very excited about this growth opportunity for Tops, especially since these stores are a natural extension of our current footprint,” said Frank Curci, Tops Markets’ chairman and CEO. “We are looking forward to having these stores, the associates and the surrounding communities become part of the Tops family, and for both our customers and us, it will be business as usual.”
The other new locations Tops is taking over include two in Dutchess County, in which it made the purchases from Stop & Shop. Currently, there are 170 full-service Tops supermarkets with more than 15,000 employees.
The purchases are expected to be completed in the next few months and are subject to customary closing conditions. Specific terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
“Upon completion of these purchases, we plan to invest in the stores and the surrounding communities in an effort to best serve our associates and customers,” said John Persons, Tops’ president and chief operating officer. “We look forward to meeting the needs of our new neighbors and customers, providing them with a positive shopping experience that focuses on variety, freshness, convenience and exceptional value.”
