Donald J. Trump is one of the most shameless liars to ever occupy the White House. It is thus unfortunate that defending such a character too often requires parroting the absurd falsehoods which he perpetually repeats.

One of these lies (which is sounded tirelessly everywhere one goes) is that the United States has open borders. To those who believe this mendacity, I’d like to know where they are getting their misinformation. We do NOT have open borders; in fact, we have not had open borders in nearly a century. Currently, the U.S. employs 23,000 border patrol agents and spends nearly $15 billion a year on border security. Why, then, do Trump and his supporters (or, I should, say, enablers) continue to pollute the political discourse with this blatant untruth?

What exactly do people mean when they claim that we have “open borders?” Suppose I was hosting an open house next Sunday and invited you to stop by. However, upon arriving at my doorstep, you are greeted by two armed guards, looking you up and down and interrogating you. That would hardly be an “open house.”

To falsely assert that the U.S. has open borders is a slap in the face to the hardworking men and women employed with the unenviable task of keeping the border safe. Just what do people think they are doing down there? Obviously, nothing, if the borders are open and anyone can freely pass with no questions asked. And if some are allowed to pass because they are seeking asylum, this is in line with our border policy until our federal government amends this procedure.

Politicians and various “news” sources have a tendency to stretch the truth. But the truth, like a rubber band, can only stretch so far without breaking. The only way to solve a problem is to understand what the problem is. And despite what we constantly hear, it is not “open borders.”
