Study Skills Workshop Comes to Chappaqua to Help Students Prepare for Tests

Midterm exams are right around the corner for high school students and a new series of workshops in Chappaqua is aiming to help stressed out students achieve better results on their tests.
“Students will come away with a whole toolbox of skills that they need to be successful in school,” said Anne Flounders, coordinator of the Southport, Conn.-based Successful Study Skills 4 Students, which will be running the upcoming programs out of the Chappaqua Learning Center.
There will be two sets of study skills workshops that will begin on Nov. 18 and consist of four two-hour sessions over four consecutive Mondays. The goal is to help high school students study and take notes in a more effective and structured way with the goal of having them achieve higher grades on exams.
The series of workshops costs $395 and includes dinner for the students each night. The sessions run from 4 to 6 p.m. or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Students who don’t want to opt for the multiday workshop can register for the Midterm Exam preparation workshop, which will be held on Sunday, Dec. 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. and cost $295. Dinner is also included.
In addition to the high school workshops, Successful Study Skills 4 Students will also be hosting a single session test prep and long-term project workshop for middle school students. This three-hour session, which will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m., will help students with time management, note taking and organization to help them better handle assignments such as research papers. This workshop will cost $295 and includes dinner.
All of the Study Skills 4 Students workshops are evidence-based, meaning that the methods used have been proven to help students be more successful. They are each limited to 11 students to increase the effectiveness of the program.
This is the first year that Successful Study Skills 4 Students has hosted workshops in Chappaqua, but the company has worked with Westchester students in the past. Michelle Sagalyn, the firm’s president, said she believes the program, in addition to students’ classes at school, is important to help youngsters be successful.
“I think study skills are a foundation for being a fantastic student,” she said. “You can have the best teachers, schools and classes but without the foundation, everything is at risk.”
