Students Collect Supplies for Hurricane Survivors
The images shown across the television screen were earth shattering, then the effects of Hurricane Sandy hit home for Mahopac freshman Anthony Lombardi.
“My aunt lost her house in Long Island,” said Lombardi, who is the son Carmel Councilman Frank Lombardi. “She lived in Massapequa and after watching all everything on the news I just felt really bad for the people who lived in Long Island, Staten Island and New Jersey.”
The loss inspired Lombardi to organize a donation drive. Lombardi recruited some of his football buddies and friends from school to help man a station at the Mahopac High School Football Field on Saturday, Nov. 10.
As families can to watch their children play football they also dropped off supplies such as water, gloves and blankets.
Everything was packed into boxes donated by Clancy Moving Systems and is being brought down to Staten Island through the use of a truck donated by Liffy Van Lines.
“There are three locations in Middle Beach on Staten Island which have not really received a lot of help,” said Debbie Lombardi. “We are going to be bringing it there. We are going to go house to house offering backed goods and some supplies.”
Gratified by the help the community has extended, Anthony Lombardi is proud of the work he and his friends have done and is considering holding additional drives to gather more supplies for the tragically hit neighborhoods.
