FIELD HOCKEY

White Plains Girls

On Friday the White Plains Tigers lost at home to the Scarsdale Raiders by the score of 2-0. Tigers goalie Zoe Shannon recorded 12 saves in the game. The Tigers had trouble finishing on the offensive side of the ball. For example late in the first half the Tigers had the ball near the Raiders’ goals and couldn’t get the ball past their goaltender.

“We had a lot of opportunities to score. We definitely had the chance to score, but it just didn’t happen to us,” said Tigers senior Jackie Iglesias after the game.

Iglesias played a superb game for the Tigers. She is very quick moving with the ball and has strong hand/ eye coordination, which allows her to control the ball and advance towards the opponents’ goals. On Friday the Raiders double-teamed her whenever she got near taking a shot at the goal.

“Jackie Iglesias played her best game yet. With a broken thumb and all,” said White Plains junior varsity coach Marybeth Stefano who was the Tigers head coach on Friday because varsity head coach Joan Behrends couldn’t attend the game because she had a death in the family.

Iglesias broke her thumb a couple of weeks ago in a game versus Ursuline.

“I think we played very well. We actually played better than our last few games. We played strong and we came here with intensity,” said Iglesias after the game.

This week the Tigers will play Bronxville and Hastings this week.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Here is a quick look at four alumni of White Plains and Stepinac are doing playing college football.

  1. Travis Coleman – Pace University- (White Plains 2012)- Coleman has played in all six of Pace’s football games this season. The strong defensive lineman has so far has racked up 11 tackles.
  2. Tyrell Goodman- University of Akron- (Stepinac 2011) – The former high school quarterback has been converted to a wide receiver. During this past weekend’s 24-10 loss to Bowling Green Goodman only caught one pass in the game and it was a 17-yard touchdown reception. It was his second touchdown reception of the season. His first came against Morgan State on September 15th. Goodman has 10 catches for 104 yards in 2012.
  3. Luiz Ribeiro- Pace University – (White Plains 2012) – Ribeiro who was always known to his high school teammates and coaches as “Brazil,” caught four balls for 22 yards this past weekend versus Southern Connecticut State University. For the season he has a total of 10 receptions for 64 yards.

SOCCER

Good Counsel Girls

The Cougars had two games last week. They won one and tied another. They beat St. Barnabas 13-1. Samantha Arroyo and Emily Anderson each had three goals in the game and Brittany Micceri had two. Also scoring for the Cougars were Colleen Wall, Amilya Jeanty, LisaMarie Nilaj, Julie Arroyo and Cathy Keanel.

In their other game versus Cardinal Spellman the teams tied the match at one goal apiece. Nina Kenny scored the one goal for the Cougars.

Stepinac

In their most recent game the Stepinac Crusaders lost to Fordham Prep by the score of 4-0. This is the second time the two teams have played each other this fall. In early September Fordham Prep beat the Crusaders 1-0.

The Crusaders have a brand new varsity soccer coach in Craig Sidley. Their most recent win was a 2-0 over Monsignor Farrell on September 25th.

“I believe the team is playing very well at the moment considering how we looked the first five games. Although all the losses were by a one-goal margin, we could’ve lost worse if the boys didn’t fight as hard as they did,” said Sidley about his team’s play early in the season.

Sidley believes his team has several strengths.

“Our strengths are our will to win, high individual skill level, and team camaraderie,” said Sidley. “With that being said, the main reason for our poor performance during the first few games is the selfishness factor prevalent in some of the more skillful players. I am trying to break bad habits of taking too many touches on the ball and not finding the simple pass fast enough.”

He believes that several players have made significant improvements to their game.

“I believe the most improved players on the team are Robert Markolovic and Jack Kavanaugh. They have shown skill and awareness improvements and have secured a spot of substantial playing time,” said Sidley.

 Solomon Schechter Boys

The Lions are off to a tremendous start to their 2012 season with a record of

7-1 on the season. Head coach Bryan Lamana credits several different things for his team’s early success.

“Some keys to success have been some good chemistry and the guys playing with a lot of energy and heart,” said Lamana.

Lamana has several players having solid seasons on the soccer field.

“Some stand out players have been sophomore Ari Leffell who is one of our central midfielders and he has five goals and eight assists.  Also Michael Franklin, who is a senior and also a central midfielder who has seven goals.  Lastly, Rafi Dodo who is a junior forward and has four goals and two assists,” said Lamana.

He believes the Lions have a chance to go far during the postseason in 2012.

“This team has been one of the better teams to come through this school,” said Lamana.  “We have made it to the sectional finals the last two years, losing to Haldane by a goal two years ago and losing in last year’s sectional finals to Hamilton in overtime. We’re excited for the post season, we have a young, determined team with sectional final experience and could be a dangerous combination for this year’s run at it.”
