Southeast Man Arrested in Major Heroin Bust
The Putnam Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Southeast man who is believed to have been a major source of heroin coming into the Putnam County.
Franyelis Ramos, a 23-year-old Southeast man, was arrest following a four-month investigation by the sheriff’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit.
According to the sheriff’s office, in September of 2012, an undercover deputy sheriff assigned to the narcotics unit, developed information that a man from the Bronx had recently took up residency in an apartment building, located at Old Route 6 in the Town of Southeast. Information gathered indicated that this individual was selling heroin to others from his residence.
During the investigation, it was determined that Ramos was making regular trips to New York City to obtain heroin for distribution in Putnam County.
Undercover deputies were able to infiltrate Ramos’ illegal enterprise and learned that he was selling the narcotic to others from his home and also supplying street-level drug dealers.
The sheriff’s offices estimates that that he was peddling 1000 bags of heroin, having a street value of about $12,000 each week.
On Jan. 8, 2013, members of the Narcotics Enforcement Unit, armed with a search warrant, went to Ramos’ home.
Ramos was arrested and charged with three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance– each count being a class “B” felony.
Ramos was arraigned before Southeast Town Justice Gregory Folchetti and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m.
The sheriff’s office said that the investigation is continuing and additional criminal charges are expected to be lodged with the court.
