Somers Sixth Grader Qualifies for Junior Olympic Fencing Championships
Hunter R. Candreva, an 11-year-old sixth grader at Somers Middle School, has earned a spot to compete at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in February.
Candreva achieved his goal of getting to the championships in Baltimore, Maryland February 15-18 by winning a bronze medal in early December at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. He is one of only two boys his age in the nation to qualify to compete at the Men’s Cadet (under17) level in Epee and the only boy his age to compete in the Cadet Men’s Epee event.
Ranked #5 in the National Rolling Points Standings in Youth 12 Men’s Epee, which rankings include fencers from throughout the United States and Canada, the 5’2” Candreva studies fencing at Putnam County Fencing Center in Brewster, where he is coached by Lasha Sopromadze.
