Solomon Schechter Lions Softball Make The Mark in 2012

It has been a very productive return to the varsity ranks of softball for the Solomon Schechter Lions.  This season was their first back playing against other varsity programs.

One must look at the season and deem it a success just by the fact the Lions won enough regular seasons games to make the Section 1 Class C tournament in their first year.

In the first round of the playoffs the Lions knocked off Palisades Prep by the score of 32-4. The Lions had an outstanding bottom of the first inning in this game, scoring 19 runs. They were able to back that inning up by scoring another eight in the bottom of the second. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule – meaning one team in softball is down by 10 runs or more after five inning of play.

Eighth grader Arielle Felberg earned a win in the game by pitching five innings, allowing four hits while striking out four hitters.

Jessie Espinet, Felberg, Maggie Lloyd and Lait Schechter all contributed three hits each in the game.

Two days later the Lions played Haldane for the Section 1 Class C Championship. On this day the breaks weren’t going the Lions’ way. They gave up 16 straight runs to Haldane, who took home the Section 1 title. The Lions were held to two hits in the game and committed a costly five errors in the field. Espinet and Jessie Jacoby picked up the two hits.

“The team played well in post season. We played better competition in the second round which was definitely a good experience for them,” said first-year head coach Samantha Yodowitz.

Yodowitz is satisfied with this group of players and what they were able to produce in 2012.

“We definitely achieved a lot this season being that it was our first year as a varsity team. We were league champions, which is a big accomplishment,” said Yodowitz. “The highlight of the season for me was definitely seeing the girls progress throughout. They worked hard all season and I think they definitely brought their game to a higher level. Seeing them take a jump from last year was fun to see.”

Felberg and Yodowitz will be busy with softball this summer.

“Arielle Felberg plays over the summer in a league. I don’t coach over the summer. I stay in the game by helping out at camps/clinics mostly on Long Island,” said Yodowitz.
