September 11 Ceremony Not Going Forward in Mt. Pleasant
A ceremony remembering September 11 will not be held by the Town of Mt. Pleasant this year.
At last Monday’s work session, Supervisor Joan Maybury announced that the American Legion, which had always organized and sponsored the event would not be doing so this year.
Maybury said the town considered running the event, but decided not to undertake it. The supervisor noted there are other events in Westchester, including an event run by the county at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, where the county’s September 11 memorial is located.
“There are other things we can do,” Maybury said. “We have a monument that we put up last year and we are thinking of naming a street after one of the victims.”
The ceremony that was conducted by the American Legion in past years drew some criticism for being religious in nature.
The town said on a larger anniversary like the 20th, it would consider teaming up with the American Legion for an event.
“It’s time to move on,” Maybury said. “Let it go, it is a natural course.”
The American Legion declined comment.
Michael J. Lyons, a 32-year old Hawthorne resident and member of the New York Fire Department, died in the attack.
