Senator Stewart-Cousins Brings State Award Ceremony to White Plains
State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins brought the NYS Senate Hall of Fame Award ceremony from Albany to White Plains to honor a special and much-respected resident, Jack Harrington.
Having served in the Marine Corps from 1946-49, Jack was the choice of White Plain’s State Senator for nomination to the State Senate’s Hall of Fame. Since Jack was not able to travel to Albany to receive the award, a ceremony was created during the Dec. 7 Common Council meeting in White Plains at City Hall. Jack was given first item on the roster and his honor was celebrated with a full house in Council chambers.
“You are not only a hero because of your service to our country, you are a hero because you continued to serve every day of your life,” Stewart-Cousins said.
Harrington was acknowledged for his work in Westchester County and White Plains as a proactive historian, environmentalist and concerned city planner. Having fought many years to place buildings on the National and State Historic Trust for Preservation lists and turning a vacated railway line into a parkland walking path, Harrington is often referred to as the Father of the White Plains Greenway.
