Rotarians/Westchester Coalition for Hungry & Homeless Collaborate on Project
On Saturday, Oct. 19 at Memorial United Methodist Church, White Plains over 800 Rotarians from 40+ Rotary Clubs around Westchester, the Bronx and Manhattan and community members came together to package food to feed over a half million people in our local areas. Local Rotary clubs have called upon Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless, Inc. to help coordinate pickup of these meals by Member Agency Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens and Shelters in Westchester County.
Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization comprising more than 150 Member Agencies serving more than 300,000 Westchester County residents each year.
“Hunger is a prominent issue in Westchester County. Approximately 83,000 people receive SNAP (food stamp) benefits here, many families who experience food hardship do not qualify for benefits, and many children go hungry each night. Our member agency food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters are dedicated to alleviating hunger and homelessness in Westchester County. We applaud the efforts of Rotary to bring the issue of hunger front and center,” said Jeanne Blum, Executive Director of Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless, Inc.
Each of the Rotary Clubs involved has donated $500, $1000 or more to fund the cost of the ingredients for this massive project to feed the needy. In total this project will exceed $25,000.
