Mike Lawler continues to maintain that months ago the House passed H.R. 2, Secure the Border Act, and it was “the strongest border security measure in the history of Congress.” There’s only one problem. That extreme bill passed with not one Democrat voting for it.

Meanwhile, senators from both parties worked for four months to create a bill that senators from both parties could accept. They even sought input from Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas, who House Republicans were busy impeaching. Unfortunately, by acquiescing to Donald Trump, politics preempted sorely needed sound policy and Republicans – including those in the House who hadn’t even read it yet – turned against the bill.

Congressman Lawler and Republicans don’t seem to realize that in order for meaningful legislation to pass, they need to stop these baseless performative impeachments and need to work with their friends across the aisle and compromise.
