Renato M. Vellutino,, a former longtime Director of Music at Pleasantville High School, died peacefully September 21 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 91.
He was born August 15, 1932 in Albany, NY to Frank and Anna (Frattura) Vellutino. He grew up in Albany and lived most of his adult life in Westchester County.
Mr. Vellutino was a U.S. Army veteran and graduate of SUNY Fredonia and Columbia University, where he received his masters and doctorate degrees. He also studied at the Julliard School of Music to become an operatic tenor. Known as “Dr. V,” he was a fixture in the community as Director of Music at Pleasantville High School for more than 40 years, enriching the lives of his students with a love for the performing arts and being named the Village of Pleasantville’s Person of the Century. He will be remembered for his passionate work ethic, relentless pursuit of excellence, and unconditional love for his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene, of 67 years, son Gian-Carlo (Catherine) and beloved grandson Jake Vellutino of Katonah, NY; twin brother Frank (Joyce) Vellutino and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Renato was predeceased by his sisters Edith Thornton, Inez Ferrari, Dora Piccoli and Olga Lassonde.
Friends may call at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Rd., Katonah, on Friday September 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 95 Plum Brook Rd, Somers, on Saturday, September 30 at 10 a.m. Private entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
