In recent years, news stories about natural disasters have become more frequent and more severe. It is no secret that climate change is swiftly becoming one of the biggest problems of our time, requiring immediate and collaborative action. Supporting political leaders like state Sen. Peter Harckham is a great way to get involved in this crucial fight for the environment.
Living in counties like Westchester and Putnam, the natural beauty we see all year round is a huge part of what makes our communities so exceptional. As a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, Harckham shares this appreciation and has used his position as chair of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee to strengthen the health of our environment.
One of the most effective members of the Senate, he passed a landmark law designed to protect the Hudson River and its nearby residents from Indian Point’s radiological pollution. Not only has this shielded the senator’s constituents from profound health effects, but it has helped the species in our local ecosystem as well.
Harckham has also passed legislation protecting our drinking water supplies, reduced pollution from waste and plastics and made geothermal energy more cost-effective. In order to assuage essential worker concerns, he has ensured that these people are provided for by writing labor standards to create high-paying jobs in the transition to a green energy economy.
In times of global crisis, re-electing Harckham is a strong step forward to protecting our natural resources. His legislative actions will maintain the Hudson Valley’s position as a fierce champion of the environment, allowing residents across all sectors to support and preserve the beauty of our region for decades to come.
