Putnam Reports 23 Carbon Monoxide Alarms in 3 Days
Putnam County officials report that there have been 23 calls related to carbon monoxide within the past 3 days.
The improper use of generators contributed to the significant number of calls.
Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas that can only be detected with a properly installed carbon monoxide detector. Improper use of gas powered appliances can lead to the deadly production of carbon monoxide.
Putnam County officials suggest the following safety tips with the residents safety as a priority.
- Know your equipment. Thoroughly read all operating and maintenance instructions before using any generator.
- If you have a transfer switch, turn main power switch in your home to the “off” position before operating the generator and activating power.
- Prioritize your electrical needs. Do not overload any generator with excessive wattage; refer to your owner’s manual for specific limitations.
- Do not attempt to wire your household electrical system into the generator.
- Use only a licensed professional to install the transfer switch to your generator.
- Gasoline is highly flammable and causes harmful fumes. It must be stored in a safety-approved container ONLY. Store gasoline container far out of the reach of children and not inside your home.
- Make sure your generator is turned OFF wait for it to cool before filling your gas tank.
- Do not use candles or any other open flame near the generator or gasoline.
- Provide adequate ventilation for toxic exhaust. Generators should never be used indoors and or near any window, door or any other place where fumes can enter the home. Provide a cooling air flow for the machine as well.
- Teach children to stay as far away from the generator as possible.
- Never operate a generator while standing in water.
