Putnam County Featured in Travel Channel’s ‘Dead Files’ Aug. 18
On Aug. 18, the Travel Channel’s paranormal television program titled, “The Dead Files” will air at 10 p.m. on Verizon Fios channel 170, as well as Comcast channel 64 and include multiple sites within Putnam County.
When approached by the Travel Channel, County Executive MaryEllen Odell was eager to bring the film crew in to create another destination to be promoted through the Tourism Department under Director, Libby Pataki.
Putnam County Legislator Richard T. Othmer, and V.T. Dacquino, author of the popular title “Hauntings of the Hudson River Valley: An Investigative Journey” and other books including one on Revolutionary War hero Sybil Ludington, are both local historians and were featured in the program to discuss the paranormal presence of Smalley’s Inn, located in Carmel, and the Historic Putnam County Courthouse.
The episode will focus on Putnam’s involvement during the Civil War, which includes the use of Smalley’s basement as the County morgue, and the hanging of George Denny; who was convicted of murder and hanged at the County Courthouse on July 26, 1844.
Smalley’s Inn, along with other historic sites located in Putnam County, have been a hot bed for paranormal researchers in recent years. This episode of The Dead Files aims to further such research in Putnam County, and mark Smalley’s Inn as an operating restaurant with rich history that offers a great meal, and a place for a potential paranormal experience.
