As chair of the state Senate’s standing committee on environmental conservation and one of the most productive members of the Senate, Peter Harckham has been a frontrunner on preserving environmental health in Senate District 40.
One of Sen. Harckham’s biggest triumphs during his previous terms was passing a law to protect the Hudson River from radiological discharge from Indian Point, a nuclear power station in Buchanan that ceased operations in 2021. The plant had been polluting the Hudson River and nearby communities for years, and its cessation of operation required a clean-up plan to be put in place to ensure that the pollution is dealt with efficiently and effectively. Sen. Harckham has undertaken this task.
This September, Republican state senators are seeking to reopen Indian Point. This plan is not feasible in the slightest, and would lead to environmental progress being reversed. He is staunchly against this plan, calling it a “…pointless election year stunt” that has “no consensus” from the entities most affected by the center’s use.
Sen. Harckham is a valiant fighter for environmental safety, and is not afraid to stand up to anyone who threatens that. In order to protect our communities from pollution and excess waste, we must keep Sen. Harckham in the state Senate this upcoming election.
