Proposition 1 Would Roll Back Gains Made in Girls’ and Women’s Sports

I was alarmed to discover that Prop 1, the so-called “Equal Rights Amendment,” could drastically change the future of girls’ and women’s sports in New York.

This amendment would likely grant biological males a constitutional right to compete on girls’ and women’s sports teams. Once that right is enshrined, it would be nearly impossible to reverse.

The consequences for female athletes would be devastating. After decades of progress under Title IX, this proposal would undermine young women by forcing them to compete against physically stronger biological males. It’s not fair. Girls will lose the playing time and scholarship opportunities they’ve worked so hard to earn.

Women’s sports have just begun to flourish in this country. Why is New York willing to jeopardize that progress?

On Nov. 5, I will be voting No on Prop 1, and I strongly encourage my friends and neighbors to do the same.
