This year’s ballot in New York State contains Proposition 1. Prop 1 is an addendum to the state constitution that will protect our rights that are already law.

Prop 1 will also update the state constitution by adding protections that forbid discrimination based on age, sex, ethnicity, gender identity, expression or orientation, as well as discrimination based on national origin, pregnancy, reproductive health care and autonomy or a person’s disability.

The reason we need an amendment to the constitution is that laws can be repealed or changed, depending upon the people who are in power. A constitutional amendment is more likely to endure. Many states around the country are modifying their constitutions in order to enshrine reproductive rights.

There are people who are opposed to Prop 1. Some of them are trying to scare you with misleading statements about what will happen to girls’ sports teams. Don’t be fooled. Girls’ sports protections fall under federal statute Title IX. Prop 1 has nothing to do with girls’ sports! It is strictly protection for our rights and freedoms. You can learn more at www.nyequalrights.org.

Please vote for the candidates of your choice on the front of the ballot and flip your ballot over to vote for Prop 1 on the back. Prop 1 seeks to protect ALL New Yorkers from discrimination. So please vote Yes to add these critical protections to the constitution of New York State.
