Players Sought for Benefit Basketball Tournament in Yorktown
By Rick Pezzullo
Players and teams are still being sought for the first annual Nothin’ But Net basketball tournament being held next week at FDR State Park in Yorktown by the Yorkville Sports Association (YSA).
Portions of proceeds from the event, which kicks off Wednesday, July 9 at 5:45 p.m., will benefit the Yorktown Teen Center and Friends of FDR Park.
“We want to get it off the ground and get it going,” said David Rocco, who is coordinating the tournament.
The three-on-three, half court contests will be 30 minutes running time each. It’s double elimination, so each team is guaranteed at least two games. Rocco said YSA is shooting for at least 16 teams. Preregistration is preferred at www.ysaleagues.com or by calling (914) 962-8390 or 914-819-8792 or sending an email to david@ysaleagues.com. Individual and team walk-ups the day of the tournament may also be accepted.
The cost per team is $150. The winning team receives $200 plus a trophy, while the runner-up receives $100 and a trophy. There will also be a Most Valuable Player named. Anyone over 16 is eligible to play.
If there’s inclement weather, the games might be held inside at Club Fit in Jefferson Valley. After the opening round on Wednesday, other games in the tournament will be held on Thursday, July 10 and Friday, July 11.
