Pines Bridge Monument Committee Stresses Brick Program
The committee behind the planned Monument to the Battle of Pines Bridge that will be situated at Downing Park met at the planned site Thursday to discuss the project’s progress so far.
Michael Kahn, who’s spearheading the monument project, said the most important thing to stress to the Yorktown community is the brick fundraising his committee is pushing.
Bricks are available online at https://www.bricksrus.com/order/pinesbridge/index.php and are available in two sizes: a $150 4-by-8 brick and a $275 8-by-8 brick.
“If every single brick projected is sold out, there will be a surplus of [funds] for maintenance,” Kahn said.
The Pines Bridge statue is projected to be eight-feet-tall — something known as “epic scale” in the world of historical monuments” — and will rest on a six-foot-high pedestal made of concrete plated in marble.
Kahn said the project has already piqued the interest of noted historians like David McCullough, and he’s received emails from reenacters “throughout the northeast” interested in reenacting the Battle of Pines Bridge when the monument is completed.
The statue, as planned, depicts a white, black and Native American solider — representative of the multicultural regiment who served under Colonel Christopher Greene and fought in the battle.
Monica Doherty, a member of the committee, said she believes the statue’s prominent location — easily visible from the road and from the Downing Park parking lot — will help draw visitors.
“When people go by, they’ll see this wonderful statue and I think they’ll be moved to pull into the parking lot,” she said. “It’s pretty unique.”
