Peekskill Police Launch Tip Line to Rid Streets of Illegal Firearms
By Rick Pezzullo
Starting today, Peekskill residents can help the Police Department rid the streets of illegal firearms by calling a newly established tip line (914) 468-4GUN as part of a new program Operation Safe Streets.
Individuals who call the tip line will have their identity protected and if a weapon is recovered, the caller will receive a $500 cash reward.
“There’s been a tremendous drop in illegal firearms and firearm-related crime in Peekskill but we’re not resting on our laurels,” said Chief of Police Eric Johansen. “Operation Safe Streets is designed to enlist the help of the entire community in reducing crime and violence even further.”
The program was first suggested to Johansen and Mayor Mary Foster by Councilman Darren Rigger following the deadly shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.
“After so many high profile shooting incidents throughout the country, I strongly believed it was time to give our citizens a way to reduce the number of guns in our city,” Rigger said.
