Panaro Named Interim Athletic Director at White Plains HS
A familiar face will be returning to the athletic offices at White Plains High School. Nick Panaro, who was the athletic director before Chip Salvestrini, has been named the interim athletic director and head of physical education of the White Plains School District by the Board of Education.
“I’m very pleased to get someone of Nick’s caliber to step in and help us through this transition period,” White Plains Superintendent of Schools Christopher Clouet said after the board voted unanimously to appoint Panaro. “He’s very talented. He’s very knowledgeable. He knows the coaches, they know him. He knows the parents, they know him.”
Panaro has strong ties to White Plains High School. He taught health education and coached track for many years before becoming the AD. He is a former director of the Glenn D. Loucks Memorial Track and Field Games and founded the Fred Gressler Memorial Cross Country Meet. He retired after the 2008-2009 school year, when Salvestrini took over.
The district has been searching for a permanent replacement for Salvestrini since it was announced this February that he will not be returning in the fall. So far, the board has been unable to find the right candidate.
“We’re waiting for candidates to come in that are up to the standards that are necessary for the position,” School Board Vice President Charlie Norris said. “It’s a very, very important position. We all recognize that. We don’t want to settle for someone who isn’t going to be able to deliver what we need.”
Clouet said there was no timetable for how long Panaro would remain in the position.
