Ossining Considers Tax Cap Override
The Village of Ossining is moving forward with approving a local law that would override the state mandated tax cap.
At Tuesday’s village board meeting, the board voted to hold a public hearing on December 6. It is expected that the board would vote on the law after the public hearing is held.
“The Comptroller’s Office recommended to us that we pass a local law to override the cap, whether we plan to or not,” Mayor William Hanauer said. “This gives us the flexibility to override it.”
The tax cap stipulates that Ossining cannot raise its tax levy more than 1.4 percent, due to the village’s court being consolidated into the Town of Ossining Justice Court. Hanauer said he thinks it’s likely that the village’s budget will override the cap.
“I cannot say for sure,” Hanauer, who was in budget meetings with departments last week, said. “Doing the right thing by protecting our infrastructure and providing safety and security to the residents and merchants of Ossining is more important than this arbitrary 1.4 percent tax cap.”
