A.22 caliber bullet was found in a classroom at White Plains High School by a janitor Wednesday evening. The discovery was brought to the attention of the White Plains Police Department on Thursday morning.

Police recovered the single bullet and according to an e-mail statement by Commissioner David Chong on Friday, police are working with school authorities to try and identify its origin.

School staff inspected some school lockers on Thursday and police did a search with their trained K-9 to see of they could locate any weapon or more bullets. ‘The search was negative,” Chong said. This was confirmed on Friday afternoon by the White Plains School Superintendent’s office in an e-mail to The White Plains Examiner.

Chong further said: “We continue to work with the Board of Education on this investigation. There are no immediate threats on the school or any students. We will increase our police presence as a precautionary measure.”

This incident comes on the heels of a summit last week held at SUNY Purchase where area school administrators and teachers met with law enforcement officials to discuss gun possession and violence on school property.

The summit was part of an initiative by Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino to respond to a national rise in shootings at schools. More can be read about the Safe Communities Initiative at http://www.theexaminernews.com/?p=28850
