NYS Decision to Allow Male Students to Compete in Girls’ Sports is Misguided

The New York State Board of Regents’ recent proposal to allow male students to play female sports in the absence of a male team is not just ill-advised, it is anti-woman and dangerous. This initiative is yet another product of the radical supermajority embedded in every agency in Albany, and exactly why I am running to represent the best interests of everyone in the 92nd Assembly District.
The fundamental purpose of sports – teaching our kids teamwork and work ethic – is compromised when safety is endangered. In contact sports the physical differences between male and female players can be overwhelming making the competition hazardous.
Consider the unfortunate incident involving Peyton McNabb, a young female volleyball player who was seriously injured by a biological male player. Peyton’s injuries were severe enough to leave her partially paralyzed. This case underscores a significant issue: the physical disparities between male and female athletes are real and can have dire consequences.
I emigrated from Italy determined to live the American Dream, and I want my young daughter and all girls to have an equal opportunity to succeed in that same pursuit. Girls deserve equal opportunities and respect in the classroom and on the athletic field, where lifelong success can be launched via athletic scholarships, especially for poor and minority girls.
This Albany-style one-size-fits-all policy will create an uneven playing field, affecting fairness, equal opportunity and jeopardizing safety. And this comes in the same week that the Albany bureaucrats decreed active shooter drills shall not occur at schools, which should make all of my fellow parents question the priorities coming from Albany.
In America, freedom of expression and respect for all are non-negotiable. And while inclusivity is a noble goal, it cannot come at the expense of girls’ safety, or their mental health, or their personal spaces. The state Education Department must scrap this awful proposal.
