I’m writing about glue traps. Rodent management can be necessary; however, inflicting intense and prolonged suffering is barbaric.

Animals stuck on glue traps panic and struggle, causing them to become further ensnarled. Often, the glue tears off their skin, feathers or fur. Animals break bones, injure organs or chew through limbs during attempts to escape. Injured animals can suffer for days until they die from blood loss, shock or dehydration. Rats, mice, birds and other animals who get stuck on glue traps are emotional and intelligent. Imagine experiencing that type of suffering.

In addition, glue traps are ineffective. When rodents are killed in an area they like, survivors often breed faster, causing an increase in the population. There are many other options for management, including cleanliness, sealing holes, mint sprays, pouches and bags, ultrasonic plug-in devices and other methods.

Many stores stopped selling glue traps and a growing list of entities are shunning them. Glue traps are banned in England, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, two states and one territory in Australia, much of Belgium, West Hollywood, Ojai, Calif and almost all 28 states and eight union territories in India.

New York has proposed a bill – S 6314/A.4785 – to ban the sale and usage of glue traps in the state. I hope Assembly members and senators hear from a massive number of constituents who oppose animal torture.
