Mt. Pleasant, Pleasantville to Combine Library Roof Bond
In an effort to cut costs, the Town of Mount Pleasant is set to approve one $666,000 bond to pay for the replacement of the roof on the main branch of the public library when it meets this week (April 10).
Originally, the town and the Village of Pleasantville were going to pass separate bonds. But the Mount Pleasant Town Board at its April 3 meeting agreed to approve one bond and have Pleasantville pay its portion to the town.
Supervisor Joan Maybury said Pleasantville Village Administrator Patricia Dwyer came up with the idea. The town’s bond counsel, Randy Mayer, informed the town it had the legal right to approve one bond for the two municipalities.
Library officials are planning to replace the roof on the main branch, which is located on Bedford Road and Romer Avenue in Pleasantville. A $240,000 state grant will pay for part of the project with Mount Pleasant picking up two-thirds of the remaining cost while Pleasantville pays for the balance of the expense.
Maybury said generally the bonding expenses are in the thousands of dollars.
Town board members agreed with the one-bond concept. Councilman Mark Rubeo called it a “great deal.”
The library board recently put the roof project out for bid. Bids are scheduled to be opened on April 18.
Library officials hope to have the project completed by the end of this summer. Work will also include the installation of a cooling tower for $120,000, which will be paid for through the library’s fund balance.
The roof has not been replaced since the library was constructed in the 1960s, although a membrane was placed over the old roof about 20 years ago. To install the new roof, the original surface and membrane must be pulled up.
