Mohegan Hair Salon Donates Earnings to Sandy Relief Efforts
Supporting charitable causes is nothing new to Rilinda “Rita” Rexhaj, owner of Shear Designs on Lexington Avenue in Mohegan Lake.
The six-year hair stylist entrepreneur donated $2,000 in October to Yorktown-based Support Connection, $500 to the Leukemia Society and also made a contribution to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla.
On Friday, Rexhaj pledged to double all the money and tips earned for the day to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
“I was really hurt by Hurricane Sandy and what people went through and with my heart I wanted to give something back,” Rexhaj said. “I’m very happy that I’m able to do this, but without my clients I wouldn’t be able to do it.”
One of Shear Designs’ loyal customers, Valerie Kavovit, was pleased to help Rexhaj. “I’m very proud of Rita,” she said. “She does an excellent job.”
State Assemblywoman Sandra Galef (D/Ossining) and Yorktown Councilman Vishnu Patel stopped by as Rexhaj welcomed American Red Cross representatives to her shop.
“This is what a community is all about. It’s a wonderful thing,” Patel said.
The American Red Cross has received $214 million in contributions following Hurricane Sandy, with a lot of the funds being used for families and individuals who lost their homes.
“Everything helps,” said Maritza Meadows, assistant director of emergency services for the Red Cross in the region. “It’s extremely important because that’s what we count on. We’re trying to help wherever we can.”
