Mahoney Looking at Run for School Board
With the resignation of Raymond Cote from the Mahopac school board and his subsequent withdrawal from this Tuesday’s election, one Mahopac alum might be stepping forward to earn a seat.
Long time resident Brian Mahoney confirmed in an interview with The Putnam Examiner he’s exploring the possibility of waging a write-in campaign for one of the three open seats on the school board. The other two candidates are incumbents Michael Sclafani and Leslie Mancuso. Both are on the ballot already.
Mahoney, when reached Thursday, said he has set up an exploratory committee and would make a final decision on whether to run or not ever the weekend.
“I’m interested in helping the district move forward,” Mahoney, who has two children in the district, said. “As an alum, I’ve always been interested supporting Mahopac and the educational initiatives that the town and the district have together.”
To Mahoney’s knowledge, he does not know of any other possible write-in candidates, but he wouldn’t be surprised if others also pursued the school board.
Mahoney is in his 17th year as an educational leader professionally, serving as the head of two private schools in the area. He was also a middle school principal at a private school and actually taught at the Austin Road Elementary School, instructing 5th grade.
“It’s important for the board and the community to have a representative on the board that has the experience, that has the knowledge that matches the expectations that we find throughout the Mahopac community.”
