Lowey Pushes for Obama’s Jobs Act
At a press conference in White Plains Thursday, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) called on Congress to pass the American Jobs Act, President Obama’s proposal aimed at lowering unemployment. Lowey was joined on the steps of the White Plains Public Safety Headquarters by officials from White Plains and Yonkers, including White Plains Mayor Tom Roach.
Obama’s proposal would, among other things, cut and suspend payroll taxes, invest in infrastructure improvements and invest in public-sector jobs such as education and public safety. It would be paid for by increasing taxes or eliminating tax write-offs for high-income Americans.
“There are few better ways to help families and provide relief than to ensure that 300,000 teachers, firefighters, police officers across the country can continue to answer their call to public service,” Lowey said. “I’ll continue to fight for each of you in Washington, as we demand that Congress pass the American Jobs Act.”
With Republicans in control of the House of Representatives and controlling enough seats to blocks legislation in the Senate, the bill appears unlikely to be passed in full, though parts of the legislation may be passed.
