Layoffs Likely in Mt. Pleasant Schools
Mount Pleasant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Guiney warned of “significant layoffs” that will be needed to balance the 2012-13 budget.
Guiney told an audience Wednesday night in the packed middle school/high school library that her proposed $50.7 million budget would include layoffs of about 20 employees. A discussion regarding which positions would be lost will take place on March 16 when she unveils the educational portion of the spending plan.
She has proposed an increase in spending of $351,000 next year, a 0.7 percent jump.
Under the current plan, property taxes for Mount Pleasant residents would rise by 2.73 percent while North Castle property owners would see their property taxes go up by 5.3 percent in 2012-13. The district’s New Castle property owners would see a 2.3 percent hike in taxes.
Guiney said she was putting together her budget with the belief that if the 2 percent property tax cap advocated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo was approved by the state Legislature it would go into effect no earlier than the 2013-14 school year.
