Kevin Whitted Named Inaugural Head Coach of the Westchester Knicks
On Thursday, Oct. 9, the Westchester Knicks took another step in solidifying their new NBA Developmental League Team, before the start of their inaugural season, at the Westchester County Center.
The Westchester Knicks introduced Kevin Whitted, as their inaugural Head Coach at Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry before he and General Manager Allan Houston led a basketball clinic for the resident-students/athletes.
Whitted, a former teammate of Houston’s on the University of Tennessee basketball team, is thrilled about the opportunity to lead the Knicks during their inaugural season. “Wow, this is exciting. I have been around for a few days getting a feel for the community and the people have been awesome,” commented Whitted, who scored 972 points in three years while playing for the Volunteers.
Whitted comes to the Westchester Knicks, after serving as the Interim Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Prior to Southwest Tennessee, Whitted served as the Assistant Coach for the Memphis Grizzlies NBA Summer League team. He also spent time coaching the D-League Fort Wayne Ants, followed by the Springfield Armor, who at the time were affiliated with the New York Knicks. Whitted also served as the President of Basketball Operations for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs of the Professional Basketball League.
“Because I knew him as a person, I was much more comfortable with his leadership style and who he is as a man. His passion for the details of developing young men on and off the court made it apparent to me that he was a good candidate,” said Westchester Knicks G.M. Houston, who played for the New York Knicks from 1996-2005.
Whitted attended the same high school as NBA legend Michael Jordan, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Whitted holds the elite distinction as being the All-Time Leading Scorer at Laney High School, after breaking Jordan’s record, by scoring 1,554 career points.
The Knicks open their inaugural regular season on the road against the Oklahoma City Tulsa 66ers, on Sunday, Nov.16. Their inaugural Home Opener at the Westchester County Center is set for Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. against the Canton Charge, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
However, the Westchester Knicks will christen their home court at the Westchester County Center when they play a preseason game, against the Delaware 76ers, on Monday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. The Delaware 76ers are the D-League affiliated of the Philadelphia 76ers.
