Katz Gets $75 Fine, Community Service for Pot Bust
State Assemblyman Steve Katz (R/C-Mohegan Lake) received a $75 fine and 20 hours of community service as part of a plea bargain deal for his March arrest for unlawful possession of marijuana following a traffic stop for speeding en route to the State Capitol.
As part of the agreement reached in Town of Coeymans Court, Katz, 59, was issued a reduced parking ticket and an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal. The marijuana charge will be struck from his record if Katz stays out of trouble for the next six months and completes his community service by the end of June.
Katz was not in court. The acceptance of the plea was made by his attorney Susan Chana Lask.
On March 14, at approximately 10 a.m., Katz was pulled over by a state trooper on the New York State Thruway for allegedly driving 80 miles per hour in a 65 zone in a 2009 Subaru. According to police, Katz turned over a plastic bag containing 3.5 grams of marijuana.
A veterinarian, Katz has refused to discuss any specific details about the incident.
