In the 2024 election, voters in the 17th Congressional District face a critical choice about their representation in Congress. Take the issue of climate, which has impacted our region with extreme temperatures and flooding. Mondaire Jones recognizes the urgent threats posed by the climate crisis and will vote accordingly. Mike Lawler, a former fossil fuel lobbyist, has recently sought to present himself as a moderate Republican who will address climate issues. We shouldn’t believe him.
Lawler’s legislative history tells the true tale, revealing a consistent neglect for environmental sustainability. During his time in the 118th Congress, Lawler voted for H.R. 1, a bill that ostensibly claims to reduce energy costs, but in reality, promoted increased fossil fuel production, exacerbating the climate crisis affecting his constituents.
Additionally, when Rep. David Cicilline (D-Rhode Island) proposed an amendment to prohibit new gas and oil leasing off New York’s coast to safeguard against oil spills that would be devastating to the region, Lawler voted against it.
Moreover, Lawler is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, whose energy policies include the controversial “drill, baby, drill” approach, the rollback of regulations aimed at fossil fuel companies, a reduction in renewable energy initiatives and the elimination of subsidies for electric vehicles.
Given this record, Lawler cannot be relied upon to prioritize the needs of his constituents over party allegiance. Voters should choose Mondaire Jones, who recognizes the urgent threats posed by climate change and understands that they cannot be ignored.
